US Signals Breakthrough in Rwanda-DRC Peace Process

President Trump and Massad Boulos as Senior Advisor for Africa speaking about DRC & Rwanda during meeting with South Africa's President Ramaphosa

In a powerful moment of diplomacy during a meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, U.S. President Donald Trump and Senior Advisor for Africa Massad Boulos signaled what could be a historic breakthrough in the long-standing tensions between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Speaking with palpable optimism, President Trump remarked, โ€œI want to see peace. I want to see happiness. I want to see health. You have incredible land and tremendous value.โ€

Reflecting on the regionโ€™s untapped potential and the destructive impact of prolonged conflict, he revealed a development few expected. โ€œWe helped settle a war thatโ€™s been raging for years, Rwanda and the Congo. And I think weโ€™ve done it, believe it or not, I think weโ€™ve done it.โ€

His statement, met with visible affirmation from his advisors, was followed by Senior Advisor Boulosโ€™ confirmation of concrete progress.

โ€œA couple of weeks ago, the two parties signed the Declaration of Principles in which they agreed on the way forward. Theyโ€™ve both submitted their draft peace agreements, and weโ€™ve put together one that incorporates both of their suggestions. Weโ€™ve given it to them, so weโ€™re in the process of finalizing it,โ€ Boulos explained.

This unprecedented announcement hints at the culmination of behind-the-scenes diplomacy that could reshape the future of Central Africa.

The DRC-Rwanda conflict, marked by decades of mistrust and intermittent violence, has exacted a heavy toll on the people and economies of both nations. Yet, from this history of hardship, a path to peace appears to be emerging, one built on dialogue, shared principles, and positive mediation.

If finalized, this agreement would mark a pivotal shift, not only in regional stability but also in how global partnerships can effectively support African-led solutions.
